Jerry Rivera is a Puerto Rican salsa singer known as “Cara de niño.”,
“El Nino de Dro”, “El bebe de la Salsa”, and “El Principe de la Salsa”.
Over the course of his career, he has put out eighteen albums which have topped both the Latin and American pop charts. His multi platinum selling album “Cuenta Conmigo” is the best selling salsa album of all time.
Jerry was born as Geraldo Rivera Rodriguez on July 31, 1973 in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Rivera’s start in music can be attributed to his talented family, including his guitarist and trio singer father, singer mother, his two salsa instrumentalist brothers Jose and Tito, and his younger sister, the famous salsa singer Saned.
Jerry began his illustrious career by singing with his father’s band “Los Barones Trio” at the age of thirteen. In 1988 famous salsa bandleader Tommy Olivencia was present at one of his father’s performances and gave the young Rivera encouragement to continue with a solo career.
This was advice Jerry Rivera took to heart by sending a demo of his singing to CBS when he was just fourteen years old. The demo paid off just one year later in 1990, when Rivera’s first album “Abriendo Puertas” was released.
His follow up, 1992’s “Cuenta Conmigo”, ranks as the best selling salsa album of all time, thanks in large part to its three hits “Casi Un Hechizo”, “Como un Milagro”, and “Cuenta Conmigo”. His performance on this record awarded him the “Singer of the Year” from the Lo Nuestro Awards.
Through all of his success, Jerry has never forgotten his father’s
impact on his life. This is shown in the album "Jerry Rivera Para
Siempre” which features the singing of his father’s trio.
He also sings duets with his father on the songs “Hiereme Sin Compassion” and “Entrega” on the 1998 album “De Otra Manera”.
Rivera successfully crossed over to the American charts in 2006 when Wyclef Jean and Shakira sampled his song “Amores Como El Nuestro” in the chart topper “Hips Don’t Lie”.
Other Rivera’s albums include the self titled “Jerry Rivera”, “Cara de Nino”, “Fresco”, and the Latin Grammy nominated tribute to Frankie Ruiz, “Cantando A Mi Idolo, Frankie Ruiz”.
In addition to singing, Rivera had appeared in the television novella “Mi Destino Eres Tu” as himself and has a small role in the movie “I Like it Like That”. Most recently, he released the album “Caribe Garde” in 2007.
