Leon Rose is a London born Caribbean salsa dancer, instructor, and choreographer who is regarded as one of, if not the best, salsa dancers in the United Kingdom.
Rose was exposed to salsa when he grudgingly went along to a dance club, and has since won the 2000 UK Bacardi Salsa competition, the 2001 Salsa Club competition, and the 2003 Aji Con Mango competition.
Rose did not start out as a dancer, but instead attended the Anna Scher
Theatre school. He has appeared on both the stage and the small screen,
including an acting gig with Judie Dench and an appearance on the UK
children’s show “Grange Hill”.
It was not until he unwillingly accompanied his mother to a salsa club that he fell in love with dancing. In his recollection, all it took was a girl to ask him to dance, and he was hooked. Rose continued in salsa, cutting his teeth at the London nightclub “Villa Stefano's”.
His dancing has taken Leon Rose to salsa congresses around the world with his
longtime dancing partner Susana Montero, to an appearance alongside
Enrique Iglesias on the British television showcase “Top of the Pops”,
and to a performance at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of Princess Diana
For all the performing that he does, it is the teaching that Rose loves the most, which is probably the reason he has been doing it for more than ten years.
Today, Rose is a choreographer and salsa instructor in London as well as at events around the world. He currently leads the classes “SOS, Salsa on Sundays” and “SAS, Something About Salsa” at the Royal National Hotel.
Rose has created the instructional DVDs “London Style Vol. 1” “Vol. 2”, “Vol. 3”, and “Vol. 4” which delve deeply into Rose’s unique style. These videos cater to intermediates and advanced dancers and the lessons are taught on 1 and demonstrated on 2.
Besides being a seasoned partner on the dance floor, Rose also joined the London All-star Latin Dance company in 2004. Rose has now become the director and choreographer of the company which is now known as “The Project” or “The Leon Rose Project”.
The other two members of “The Project” are Inaki Fernandez and Frank Santos. The project has performed short programs at various salsa congresses including the UK Salsa congress and is preparing a large show in the very near future.
